Garfield King was an 18 year old from the Trappe district of Wicomico County. On Saturday, May 21st, 1898, he was accused of shooting a 22 year old white man named Herman Kenney, who later died of his wounds.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 25th. A group of white men abducted Garfield King from the County Jail, beat him, hung him by a rope from a tree, and then shot his body at least 50 times.

No one was ever held accountable for this crime, reportedly the first known lynching in Wicomico County.
