Wicomico Truth and Reconciliation Initiative is a grassroots coalition of community members who are dedicated to addressing Wicomico County's history of racial violence and promoting community engagement and healing.
On December 4th, 2016, community members came together to remember #MatthewWilliams, who in 1931 was lynched by a mob of hundreds of white residents of Wicomico County.
We then learned that Matthew was not the only victim.
In the years since this first gathering, we have formed vital relationships with others in our community, around the state, and with partners in the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, AL... so that we will not just learn from our past, but also nurture our future together as a community.
Because it is only when we have the courage to #TellTheTruth, that we can ever hope for true healing and reconciliation.
